Counting the Tuna Catch - Victorian West Coast Tuna Survey

News Item - June 21st  2011

The Recreational Fishing Licence Grants program is funding a scientific study to estimate the size of the recreational fishery for SBT in south-western Victoria, which is proving popular again this season.  Victorian recreational fishing is part of a much larger Australian and international fishery for SBT. The total recreational catch of SBT in the Australian fishery is not known.  Additionally, there is no formal allocation of SBT quota for recreational fishing, although State fisheries rules play a part in managing individual catches.

    News Item - March 15th 2011

The popularity of fishing for southern bluefin tuna (SBT) in south western Victoria has increased over the past five years. For example, there were over 500 boats targeting tuna near Portland, Port Fairy and Warrnambool over the weekend of 22/23 May 2010 (most of which were recreational fishing boats). The Recreational Fishing Licence Grant program has funded a project that will provide the first scientific estimate of the size of the recreational fishery for SBT in south western Victoria.
